Sometimes a smell, a sound, or even a certain tone of voice can send your nervous system into overdrive.It’s because your brain remembers past moments when you didn’t feel safe. Even if today’s situation is different, your body reacts like it’s happening all over again.
But here’s the good news: your brain can learn a new response.
Step 1: Explore
Notice what triggered you.
Example: Someone raised their voice → You felt startled.
Step 2: Discover
Describe your reaction.
What did you feel in your body? What emotions came up?
Example: “My heart raced. I froze. I felt scared, just like when I was a child.”
Step 3: Heal
Honor the feeling without judgment.
It’s okay to feel what you feel. This part of you deserves kindness.
Example: “It makes sense I felt scared. That part of me needs compassion.”
Step 4: Integrate
Connect your feelings to past experiences.
Ask yourself: What memory is this reaction tied to?
Example: “This loud voice reminded me of being yelled at as a child.”
Step 5: Release
Choose a new response.
Use calming tools like deep breaths, placing a hand over your heart, or saying:“I see you. I hear you. I will keep you safe.”
This helps your nervous system return to balance so you can respond in the present moment—not from old wounds.
